7. THE MECHANICS OF POLITICS

This chapter starts with a survey of the current political landscape. It argues that all the slippages in recent years (Brexit, Trump, COVID-19, etc.) are fundamental failures of the political system, caused by either negligence or political machinations. It goes on to explain how politicians have lost control of an increasingly complex world, and rather than talk honestly to the people, they seek to simplify or conceal their true interests. Moving on to offer a vision of the future, the chapter warns against the perennial glorification of democracy in its present stage and argues that stark choices face us if we are to rescue our political system. It argues that through technology and adaptations to our expectations, the world could enjoy a new epoch of peace and prosperity.
