4. THE MECHANICS OF BIOLOGY

Beginning with a recognition of the role of genetics in guiding humanity, this chapter notes the limits of human biology. It shows that there is scope – and indeed the technological knowhow – to finally break free from our age-old reliance on our physical bodies. With a nod to innovative thinkers such as Raymond Kurzweil, it argues that civilization will reach a ‘tipping point’, where science would allow us to live outside our bodies in simulated environments. It argues that when we reach this point, the only thing holding us back would be our physical forms, and that to advance as a species, we might have to take the plunge and accept the undeniable benefits that a formless existence would bring.
