6. THE MECHANICS OF RELIGION

This chapter begins with a meditation on religion’s place in future society. Through an exploration of the ubiquity of faith and worship amongst civilizations on earth, it argues that genetics is a key factor in ensuring the presence of devotion to deities. The so called ‘God gene’ is placed in its proper scientific perspective before we move on to envisioning the future of religion. There is an examination of whether it might be side-lined by a world that shuns bodily revelation and moves towards a simulated virtual reality. In a hopeful, balanced manner, the chapter ends by offering some explanations of why religion might be a thing of the past or re-define the philosophy of consciousness.
